Amazingly, we're still waiting for Huntsville, Ala. rappers Paper Route Gangstaz (PRGz) to follow up 2008's Diplo/DJ Benzi remix project Fear and Loathing in Huntsvegas. Besides last summer's woozy weed blitz, "Keyshia Cole," there's been precious little new tunes from the foursome, though there's talk of an EP and a full-length to be released by Koch Records and executive-producd by Diplo.
"Trap Like Mine" is the latest song to come down the PRGz trickle-like pipeline. Like most of their music, the thing bumps with a spinning, hallucinogenic motion, as if the PRGz and their producers Block Beattaz are permanently on the back end of a drug trip. G-funk keyboards, an underwater vocal sample, and pillowy drum thuds swim through the mix while Dawgy Baggz, Jhi Ali, Mata, and Gunt cycle through their potent brand of late-night braggadocio. As "Keyshia Cole" attests, the line between women and drugs is a blurry one for PRGz. Similarly, on "Trap Like Mine," it's hard to tell sometimes whether they're talking about having sex or getting high. [Traps N Trunks]
