Of Montreal: "Hyrda Fancies"

It took Of Montreal's Kevin Barnes ten years in the business to discover his soulful falsetto, and he's been putting it to good use ever since: the forthcoming False Priest will be his third album in four years. "Hyrda Fancies" continues Barnes' exploration of everything R&B, dashing the dreams of those who hoped he'd wash off that silly glam make-up and start writing quirky indie pop songs again. But whatever fans his ongoing transformation loses him will be amply made up for, if this song is any indication. If you weren't sweaty already, this creepy ("kissing your deaf son..."), sexy track will surely do the trick. It was produced by Jon Brion, another middle-aged white guy* who found his inner-soul late in life, and Jonelle Monae producer Chuck Lightning recommends we "bow in gratitude" to him for the "beautiful symphonic roar of stacked Yamaha CS-80 synths at the end of this track." That is, if you ever stood up from bowing in gratitude for "The Underdog"'s horn section. You can listen to "Hydra Fancies" here.

False Priest is available September 14 via Polyvinyl.

*Fine, Kevin Barnes is only 36, but still.
