“I won’t lie to you, I’m frightened,” says host David Letterman, as Atlana’s Mastodon appeared on his show on Friday night (May 15). The band is used to feeling out of place; they certainly don’t fit into the current Deerhunter/Black Lips-driven Atlanta scene, and nor are they typical talk show fodder.
Here, they perform “Oblivion” from their enormously successful Crack the Skye album, which debuted at number 11 on the Billboard 200 chart. The song is propelled by some seriously big riffs and solos, which utterly destroy Letterman’s audience. Dave even calls them “beautiful” at the end, which isn’t a description often applied to Mastodon’s music.
