“No Way Down” is a sparkling pop-rock highlight off the Shins’ latest album Port of Morrow, but in the new clip for the track, the band leads it in another direction. Instead of layering the studio cut over a video of, say, home-recorded footage, the band heads to a cabin in the woods of Portland, Oregon and tries out a new take altogether.
The result is something–dare we say?–funky, with James Mercer and Co. highlighting the rhythmic punch of the song. The bass line bubbles, the drums crackle, and the harmonies are naturally pitch-perfect. It’s fun to see the Shins as a jamming garage band instead of aloof studio wizards, and the video makes a pretty impassioned case for catching them in the live setting this summer.
