Nicolay, The Hot At Nights: 'Shibuya Session' (EP)
To many, Wilmington, N.C.-by-way-of-the-Netherlands producer Nicolay is known as one half of soul/R&B duo the Foreign Exchange with rapper-singer Phonte. But Nicolay also has a diverse and rich solo catalog to his name. And he made one of his strongest statements on his own in 2009 with City Lights Vol. 2: Shibuya. The mostly instrumental affair showcased his increasingly varied approach to production along with his killer ear for melodies.
And to breathe some new life into Shibuya, Nicolay linked with Raleigh, N.C. jazz trio The Hot At Nights to reintepret/rearrange eight of the album's tracks. The resulting effort is Shibuya Session, a free EP that proves jazz certainly ain't dead and that you should make it a point to see these guys on their upcoming tour.
