My Drive Thru (MP3) ft. Santogold, Julian Casablancas (MP3)

Average Rating: 6.00

What do you get when you mix a member of the Spank Rock crew, a Stroke, and a N.E.R.D.? Apparently, “My Drive Thru,” a track commissioned by Converse to commemorate the centennial of the Chuck Taylor.

The three participants here deliver exactly what you’d expect from all of them: Pharrell kicks the track off with his trademark, goofy, Prince-like falsetto, Casablancas sounds drunk and mumbles a lot, and Santogold sing-raps put-offs to some unknown aggressor.

Production wise it’s pretty stagnant; one riff is played underneath all the performers with very little change at all throughout the song’s four minutes.

If anything, this track stirs up the heat for the rumored track collaborations between Bradford Cox (he of Atlas Sound and Deerhunter infamy), YACHT, Kid Sister, Gallows, Does it Offend You, Yeah?, Fiery Furnaces, and Care Bears on Fire.  [Nah Right]

Julian has a wonderful voice, and its not like he sounds drunk when he does this. At least, that's the sound he has on all his pieces, so he must be perpetually drunk. Moving on, that jazzy loop in the background was first comical, and later gag-inducing. I pray to the rock gods that this will not turn people off the Strokes. Their music is really full of life and great guitars, and this is certainly not a piece that reflects everything Julian's mind is capable of creating. Mr. Casablancas, if you should chance to read this, please inform me on your website that you did see it in the form of thanks to the people on the front lines of Stroke-bashing. Include a tentative release date of future albums.
Post Script: It is nice to hear a Stroke after so many years.

I couldn't tell if Julian was the one singing the reggae-like garbage at the beginning. I finally heard him at the end, but there seemed to be none of him on there. That jazz stuff in the background was just plumb peculiar. I think this did the Strokes a great disservice. Julian creates such beautiful music, and I still thought his voice sounded nice on here, but with everything else going on the piece was awful. But maybe this is what pays the bills for these guys, what with all the people ripping their music off of limewire. He took a chance. The video should at least be interesting.

I like the track. It sort of grows on you. And as for Casablancas. Well he's kinda mismatched with Santogold and Pharrell. Fake ass Prince? He's never tried to emulate Prince. That's just his voice.

But yeah, I enjoyed Santogold. And I'm a fan of The Strokes, I dont' see why this song did a disservice to the Strokes if it's just Julian collaborating with two other artists.
Just because Julian is collaborating for one song, it doesn't mean it HAS to sound like a Strokes song.

You have to separate the two.

It's a great song by itself, a great collab.

I hated it at first, but another listen made me a fan. I've played it countless times today and love it. Julian, please get Albert to focus on The Strokes and give us some more music. Or, at least play a few shows in NYC, so my roommate can see you before her visa runs out. Oh, and despite all the crap reviews, FIOE is awesome!!!! Can't wait for the next album!

This track is so awesome! As for Julian, you have to seperate The Strokes from this collab .This is a collab w/ two very different artists than The Strokes who I absolutely love by the way. However, this track is not a Strokes song, its a collaberation you know, everyone bringing their unique styles together to create something really cool.
