Nelly: "Tippin' In The Club"

Last week, I heard"Country Grammar" during the throw-back hour on the hip-hop station here in Madison, and somehow, even though it's only been out for 10 years, that song seemed older than anything the station played by Biggie or Digital Underground. I suspect this is because Nelly was the biggest pop star in the world there for a while; it's impossible to even say "it's getting hot in here" without someone saying "so take off all your clothes." So when Nelly tries the club-rap of Black Eyed Peas (or Usher, even, really) on "Tippin' in the Club," his new single, he sounds like the Sugar Hill Gang trying to do G-Funk. It just doesn't add up, and it sounds out of place and desperate. Which is unfortunate for Nelly, since he used to be the biggest. But then he gave birth to cats like Flo Rida, who have supplanted him as the kings of this kind of pap rap. Weep for Nelly, kids, as he sleeps on a bed made out of Pimp Juice cans and Apple Bottom jeans. Listen below.

Nelly's Nelly 5.0 is due out later this year.
