Mystikal: "Papercuts" f. Lil Wayne, Fiend

You might have missed the (rather huge) news that Mystikal was released from prison earlier this year after serving six years for sexual battery and extortion. Unlike Gucci Mane, the Nola-bred shouter hasn't celebrated his newfound freedom by recording a boatload of music and releasing it pronto. He's probably been doing more understandable things instead, like enjoying the occasional drink or smoke and, you know, hanging out with his family.

But what little we have heard from Mystikal's second act has been pretty much on fire, as if he hasn't lost an ounce of energy or passion since 2003. First there was the zoot-suiting jazz of "Set Me Free," which featured Lloyd, then there was vintage late-90s bounce of "I'on't Like You," with former No Limit hand Fiend. On each of these songs Mystikal unleashed a barrage of his characteristically hilarious venom.

The newest entry in Mystikal's post-prison oeuvre is arguably the best so far. In addition to Fiend, an on-point Lil Wayne shows up for "Papercuts." The sparse, clinking beat would have made Master P drool a decade ago, and Wayne, Fiend, and Mystikal spit their verses as if they're dunking basketballs. My personal 10.0 would go to Mystikal's "I feel like I haven't dropped a fucking album since the Beatles," if only for sentimental reasons, but the whole thing is a thriller. If Mystikal keeps releasing music this strong, he can go as slowly as he wants. It's just good to have him back. [RealTalkNY]
