My Morning Jacket have to be the most ambitious Southern rock band on the planet. From concept albums to Boston Pops duets, the band has consistently attempted to extend their creative reach a little bit futher. Chalk up the band's Self-Hypnosis Series as another entry into that catalog.
The series is a benefit of being a member of the band's Roll Call, which is a $29.99 yearly membership, which nets you a free shirt, pre-sale tickets to MMJ shows, and access to the Self-Hypnosis Series, where you can download songs like "Octoplasm" from the band. There's a hilariously over the top explanation of the concept behind the Self-Hypnosis Series here, but the basic jist is that MMJ is releasing songs that Roll Call members can download.
"Octoplasm" is the first track of the series, a song that treads crazy middle ground between jazz, jam, and southern rock. It may not "provide a vehicle for the listener to enter a new gateway of self exploration," like MMJ claim, but it's certainly an engaging instrumental worthy of a listen. Check it out here. You can become a Roll Call member by pre-ordering MMJ's forthcoming album Circuital, which sees release May 31. [130Bpm]
