My Chemical Romance

"Desolation Row" (Bob Dylan Cover) (Video)

You know what doesn't come up often regarding criticism of Watchmen (which is really great by the way)? The fact that the music (old songs from Nena, Wagner, Simon & Garfunkel, and Jimi Hendrix) really take you out of the movie (even more so than some clunky dialogue). I mean, sure, I get that it's in an alternate 1980s, but would Nena still have a hit single ("99 Luftballoons") that would need to be played as Silk Spectre II gets out of a car in a tight dress?

But the worst musical inclusion is the cover of Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row" by My Chemical Romance, who remake the song into an atonal karaoke shout backed by Garage Band-esque punk riffs. The song closes the movie, and since Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changin'" opens the movie, you can't have Dylan in the movie twice (licensing fees, y'all). But choosing this band to do this song is an aural disaster, and this dark "OMG this concert iz so crazee!" video doesn't do it any favors. Real talk, this song is the pits. [Idolator

Yeah, I suppose Dylan would get a cut of that as well, but not the same as The Times Are A-Changing at the beginning.

I'd been fearing hearing this version ever since I heard they were doing it, but I gotta say, when the credits rolled, I was really surprised at how listenable it was. As cool as they are, MCR is the last band you'd think should do a Dylan cover.

I'm sorry, but a band like My Chemical Romance shouldn't attempt to cover a Bob Dylan song. The video sucks too.

I liked it, thought it fit with the end of the movie (which was as almost all cross-media interpretations, okay but unexceptional). I don't know the band, but I thought they were trying to imitate the Sex Pistols, didn't first realize it was Desolation Row, and smiled when I did. Re imagining songs we have heard a million times is a good idea. Imitation is tiresome, so I am glad they put their own stamp on it. The video was dumb, but at least unpretentious.
