Last February, Mulatu Astatke brought his hypnotic blend of "Ethio-jazz" to a Los Angeles audience as part of the Timeless Concert Series. With a DVD of the shows due on March 30, the folks at Mochilla and Vtech have been trickling out excerpts. Last month they gave us a glimpse of Dwele and the Ma Dukes Orchestra on their Dilla tribute, and this week, they posted a number from Astatke's set.
Joined onstage in Los Angeles by jazz giants Azar Lawrence, Bennie Maupin, and Phil Ranelin (of Tribe Records), Astatke provides a dynamic and decidedly funkier-than-usual performance of "Yekermo Sew," a cut popularized by Jim Jarmusch's Broken Flowers. The drums and percussion bang brighter here than they do on wax, but the real pleasure is watching Astatke, at 66, still so nimble on the vibes. A video and MP3 download is available at Vtech.
