Motion City Soundtrack covers Pavement
On the latest installement of A.V. Undercover, Minneapolis moog-keyboarding pop-punkers Motion City Soundtrack made their way to the A.V. Club's studios in Chicago for a cover of Pavement's biggest hit single, 1994's "Cut Your Hair."
Instead of drastically increasing the volume of the original or speeding the song up to 180 bpm, the band opts for a five-man acoustic campfire version of the indie classic. Hey, check it out, MSC lead vocalist Justin Pierre sounds an awful like Stephen Malkmus when he's not singing super high and nasally as he and most pop-punkers are wont to do.
But, it's a great performance all around (not self-involved with an original approach), and the guys from Motion City Soundtrack seem to have an awful lot of fun paying homage to their high school heroes. The A.V. Undercover sessions have been pretty interesting week after week, and thumbing through past performances you may have missed is highly suggested.
Nothing against Motion City Soundtrack, but that's one of those songs that's so good that if you cover it faithfully you're bound to score.
Such a good idea for a Web series, too.
