The video for Mogwai’s “Mexican Grand Prix” is not filmed in Mexico. It’s filmed in the band’s native Glasgow, which isn’t even close to Mexico. It’s foggy and gray and urban and people are wearing coats and hats everywhere. Really, the video is what it would be like if you put “Mexican Grand Prix” on your iPod and then walked around Glasgow for an afternoon, looking at people everywhere you went. But even though nothing much changes except the backgrounds and faces, the clip’s still strangely hypnotic. Few bands give a better soundtrack to our quiet urban lives than Mogwai, and there's something pleasing about putting their music on everyone's face.
The awesomely titled Hardcore Will Never, Die But You Will is out Tuesday on Sub Pop.
