'This Is It' Soundtrack Lands at No. 1 on Billboard Charts, Selling 373,000 Copies

The Kenny Ortega-directed concert film This Is It is a harrowing and deeply resonant look at the dramatic final months of Michael Jackson's life. The movie's soundtrack isn't quite as transcendent, but that hasn't stopped it from topping the Billboard 200 charts, selling an unsurprisingly high 373,000 copies in its first week. The soundtrack is a satisfactory mix of Jackson's most famous works ("Thriller," "Beat It," "Billie Jean"), his best works ("Beat It" again, "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," "Human Nature," "Smooth Criminal"), and a few left-field surprises, like the militant "They Don't Care About Us" and maudlin ballad "Earth Song." You already have all of these songs in one form or another, but there's a reason people are picking this one up. [Billboard]
