Michael Franti & Spearhead are out there promoting their 2010 record The Sound of Sunshine, which included a trip to Jay Leno’s studios last night (Feb. 28) to perform “I’ll Be Waiting.” Franti’s musical inclinations have completely separated from his origins now—it’s unthinkable that this is the same guy who recorded with the Beatnigs on Alternative Tentacles back in the late ‘80s, or delivered the incendiary hip-hop/electro jams of the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. Instead, what we get now is a light soul/pop mash-up that mainlines a purely feel-good aesthetic, with Franti encouraging Leno’s audience to clap along with him. I guess his former mantra, “television, the drug of the nation,” is long behind him now.
