MGMT somehow beat the odds (borrowed sounds from the Flaming Lips, stoner hokiness, a middling album) to become one of 2008's biggest successes. They're even huge hits over in France, where they performed a special Thanksgiving version of "Kids" which finds the band dressed as Pilgrims surrounded by women dressed as Indians and men dressed as fellow Pilgrims, for a generally cheesy performance. I'm not sure what the purpose the costumes serve other than as a weird visual component. And I'm also perplexed by the Indian giving a Pilgrim a back massage, and copious shots of a pug and a Pilgrim on a Segway. These guys are so "weird."
The interview that followed was awful. What a miserable way for MGMT to spend their Thanskgiving, lipsyching on a French TV show where the guests believed they couldn't call their album 'Mystic Bulls--t' because you can't use the word "mystic" in album titles in the States.
Whoa. Pilgirm on a Segway. Now I must watch.
