Two years ago, New York City hip-hop duo Metermaids ambitiously remixed and sampled tracks from Sufjan Stevens' much celebrated Illinoise to create Nightlife in Illinoise, which used the a cappellas from MetermaidsNightlife debut. The results were, for the most part, impressive as the mixtape breathed new life into both the raps of Metermaids and the grandiose folk of Stevens. As you could imagine, the duo wasn't about to stop there.
The New Yorkers released several follow-up projects, including the well received Smash Smash Bang on Sage Francis' Strange Famous imprint. They also began working on a mixtape, HELLO, with renowned DJ Rob Swift. And they again looked to remix notable indie rock hits from the likes of Spoon, Grizzly Bear and Animal Collective, the latter of which is sampled and chopped here on "Girls and Music." Although slightly jarring at first, it comes together perfectly about one minute into it. The combination of Swift's smooth cuts, the giant hook and Metermaids' doubletimed flows makes for one hell of a track. It looks like we're in for another strong remix project from these guys that could very well top Nightlife in Illinoise.
You can listen to "Girls and Music" here. HELLO drops June 22.
