Mercury Rev was always one of the dreamier of the dream pop bands, but the opening of "Senses on Fire" is straight out the netherworld, sticking into your head so much that you won't notice the natural transition into quite a fine rock song. I guess the opening's meant to tingle the spine, but actually masks some of the songs better moments. It's not perfect, as it never really progresses from its initial entry of guitars. But still an intriguing indication what's to come.
The song will appear on Mercury Rev's new album Snowflake Midnight,the more widespread release of the two Mercury Rev is releasing. As previously reported, the other album, Strange Attractor will be available for free download. Both hit the market September 9.
