Given the members' long history of interest in gender confusion, you have to think that a significant portion of the band-naming session that produced this Le Tigre side project consisted of snickering about the wave of press releases that would begin," JD Sampson and Johanna Fateman are....MEN!" Besides the name on your iPod screen, there's not much in the way of socio-sexual provocation in "Make it Reverse." There's a good chance it might inspire some hip movement, however. Le Tigre's foundation has always been easy danceability, with Kathleen Hanna's beat-you-over-the-head politics occasionally elevating their songs to another level, and occasionally harshing the buzz. With no Hanna, Men are a less preachy and a little more frazzled (on this track at least). The synth stabs are nervously repetitive, the drum hits are Phil Collins' big. According to the words, the duo is "realer than this bassline." While I suspect further material might inch towards righteousness, right now they are exactly as real as their bassline, because so far rhythm's all they've got.
