Stones Throw's preeminent (only?) soul singer Mayer Hawthorne recently dropped in Spinner's Interface to rock out the empty soundstage, retro-like, performing tracks from his 2008 debut album, A Strange Arrangement. Hawthorne's retro-soul vibe might strike some as slightly calculated, but you'd be hard pressed to find a soul pastiche artist that is this is sincere. His label head, Peanut Butter Wolf, thought Mayer was a remix artist who reworked old soul songs when he first heard his demo, and it's not hard to hear why in tracks like "Wish It Would Rain." You could probably slip this onto a Philly soul comp from the 1960s and nobody would notice, which is the mark of a good revivalist. Head to Spinner to see more.
A) I'll never understand why the hipsterati has embraced this guy while ignoring the far more interesting Jamie Lidell
B) "Wish It Would Rain" is already the name of an extremely famous (and excellent) song and album by The Temptations. Seems pretty disingenuous to steal the title for this lite soul snoozer.
LOL @ MFB's comment, lol.....ok buddy.

I don't think hipsters are up on Mayer...but that's just my observation.
