As he promised yesterday with the release of his cover of ELO's "Mr. Blue Sky," Mayer Hawthorne delivers the Impressions EP today for free download. The Detroit native and his band, the County, tackle six tracks from both the past and present. They open the project with a slick cover of the Isley Brothers' "Work to Do" (from 1972) before sliding into Chromeo's 2010 candles-and-roses jam, "Don't Turn the Lights On." And yet, thanks to Hawthorne and the County's playing, everything sounds smooth and cohesive like the source material is from the same time period. I expect plenty of babies to be made to this...just sayin'.
