Yesterday, Mayer Hawthorneannounced his big move from Stones Throw to Universal Republic, which will release his sophomore album, How Do You Do, this fall. To coincide with that news, the Detroit soulman also dropped his first single on the label, "A Long Time." The track basically squelches any ideas that Hawthorne and his band, the County, are going to glossy up their sound or go for pure-pop. Although, to be fair, his debut, A Strange Arrangement, was perfectly radio friendly. What has changed on "A Long Time," though, is that there is a distinctly more rock and funk-influenced sound here. It's something I would like to a mix of the Isley Brothers and Curtis Mayfield, though there is more of an emphasis on the former.
Stream "A Long Time" at Some Kind of Awesome. It's out now on iTunes.
