Mavis Staples: "You Are Not Alone"
On her upcoming album You Are Not Alone, legendary soul/gospel singer Mavis Staples teamed up with Wilco general Jeff Tweedy, who not only produced the album but wrote a few of the songs as well. The title track is one of these -- it's a spare, acoustic-driven number that takes a break for a slowly unspooling guitar solo, with Staples layering her weighty vocals over the entire thing. It's heavy, but not in the way most people would use the word these days. Give it a listen over at Pitchfork.
