Mavis Staples’ album with Jeff Tweedy, You Are Not Alone, was released in September, and they made the brave step of being subjected to an interview on the Colbert Report to promote it last night (Oct. 6). “Why haven’t you found your sound yet?” asks Colbert, after running through the myriad styles Staples has covered in her career.
Tweedy and Staples subsequently got together to perform the title track of the record, which is a subtle combination of some of the genres Colbert mentioned in his interview; tinges of gospel, country, and rock all rise to the surface during this performance, with Staples sounding in fine voice at the center of it all.
