Marnie Stern is a guitar geek's dreamgirl. She can shred with just about anyone on the planet, but can still be a huge nerd with her sci-fi and Back to the Future references. "Transformer" the first track we hear off Stern's sophomore album This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That (say that 5 times fast!). The track is quite futurist and, if not for Stern's distinctly feminine presence, you'd swear Eddie Van Halen had a role in it somehow. It's not a particularly musically interesting or melodic track, but it shows that the charm of Stern's first album In Advance of the Broken Arm will not be lost even as she tries to expand her sound. Screw chasing the dragon, Stern is the real guitar heroin(e). [Pitchfork]
