The video for Marissa Nadler's "River of Dirt," directed by Joana Linda, is equal parts hazy afternoon stillness and jarring fever dream. The land that passes by as Nadler and her rabble drive the countryside is sliced up by memories and disjointed images that smartly keep you off-guard instead of letting you settle into a typically sun-drenched and melancholy clip. But despite the videos willful strangeness, Linda knows when to simplify the shots and make way for Nadler's ghostly vocals. Few people can make the phrase "El Camino" sound so affecting.
Nadler's new album, Little Hells, will be out March 3 on Kemado. [Stereogum]
