For their latest trick, the dastardly duo of dancehall Major Lazer take an old Chicago house jam and turn it into a club track for Halloween fun houses. Cajmere's "Coffee Pot (It's Time for the Percolator)" gets the snare-and-bubbles treatment, which somehow works, and gets trick-or-treated here with a Konee Rok video.
Major Lazer have really been pushing this late-'80s Saturday morning cartoon aesthetic for a while, but on "Percumajor" it seems kind of ironic and tongue-in-cheek. To me, the Back to the Future motif seems like a comment on remixes and our ability to change past culture, though I doubt most viewers will recognize the Cajmere song (I know I didn't). But that's essentially what DJs do: take old things that you recognize and make them new and fun again. And it's what they've done here, with coffee that rides hoverboards and dinosaurs with lasers.
Or maybe it's just an excuse to put coffee pots on hoverboards.
