Magnolia Electric Co.: "It Made Me Cry" (Stream)

On Record Store Day, Magnolia Electric Co. released the limited-edition "It Made Me Cry" 7-inch. The claim is that there were 1000 copies made, although it could have been 10 for all I know, since no one seemed to be able to get a hold of a copy. And while a download doesn't quite take the place of a limited-edition vinyl, those of us that missed out back in April have been given a consolation prize. The band has now released the single digitally on iTunes. And the title track is a curious little number, emphasis on little. Jason Molina and company tend to stretch out in lengthy, slow-burn tunes, but "It Made Me Cry" barely cracks the minute mark. Not to worry though, since in place of their normal length, they've worked a surprising amount of space into this track that makes it feel much bigger than it is. The drums thump and click deep in the background, while Molina's pained howl sounds like he's living in your ear. And somewhere in between those two distant poles, guitar and piano float around and fill out the track. Check it out at Hype Machine now.
