M83 recently paired up with directing hub website Genaro.tv to crowdsource a video for the band's anthemic, lush Hurry Up, We're Dreaming single, "Steve McQueen." Frontman Anthony Gonzalez only had one suggestion for directors itching to produce the winning video: "It's not about the actor!"
The winning selection, directed by Balthazar Auxietre and Sylvain Derosne, premiered today — and while the video does takes Gonzalez's suggestion to heart, the clip does capture the magic of imagination and childlike wonder so integral to good filmmaking. Featuring stop motion animation and a variety of vintage audio gear and plastic toys, "Steve McQueen" follows a young boy as he conducts the goings on of his own fantastical wonderland in the comforts of his own backyard.
