The Los Angeles version of Vampire Weekend, Local Natives, appeared on Craig Ferguson’s show last night (May 6) to perform a version of “Airplanes” from Gorilla Manor. Perhaps it’s a little unfair to refer to them in such a way, but the band certainly shares more than a few musical fascinations with Ezra Koenig and his group.
At this point it’s hard to say how the freak folk genre, which Local Natives also draw on heavily for inspiration, will fare this decade. There are only so many beards, unusual string instruments, and moments when the drummer hits the rim of the drum that we can withstand as a population—but Local Natives seem to be doing okay out of it so far.
