"Hotel Chelsea #2" (Leonard Cohen Cover) (MP3)

Okay, there have been plenty of versions of "Hotel Chelsea #2." But who can blame everyone? Cohen's original is plenty good enough to outlast its overexposure, and who wouldn't want to have their chance to step into such a brilliant songwriter's shoes?

So while there's not much new added to the original on Lewis and Clarke's take, they are still a band well-suited to take on Cohen's tale, and they do it well. Lou Rogai's whispered grumble is a solid stand-in for Cohen's groan, and behind him his band swirls and dips through the track, playing into the song's boozy nostalgia. The track is offered as a bonus on the colored vinyl pressing of the Light Time EP, which is limited to only 500 copies.

Light Time EP is out now on La Societe Expeditionnaire. [Stereogum]

Rumor has it that Leonard Cohen wrote this song about a night with Janis Joplin at the Chelsea Hotel

Great cover of one of my favorite songs! Very tasteful cymbal work! Well done!

nice.

try Lloyd Cole's cover, best imho. find it on www.jango.com

yep, Leonard's ex manager spilled the beans re Janis Joplin, Leonard none too pleased, he preferred it to remain anonymous

Have to disagree... Nobody sings it like Leonard does!

Excuse me - but, in my humble opinion, nobody sings this like Leonard Cohen. Everyone else (Rufus included) takes a back seat. Rufus may reach that kind of status someday, but it won't be with a cover of Mr Cohen's work.

Great cover.

I don't like Rufus or Buckley when they do Cohen. Too effusive for me. And that style isn't appropriate to this song, which is about a guy who is somewhat indifferent: "I don't mean to suggest that I loved you the best ... that's all, I don't think of you that often."

Cohen is better done with a bit of resignation in the voice. This track does that well in my book.

Mintz: it's not a rumour, Cohen has publicly stated as much many times.

Mintz: it's not a rumour darling....and this version is just insipid.
