As we previously reported, Bay Area hip-hop O.G. Lateef The Truthspeaker is gearing up to drop his new solo album, FireWire, in November. It's set to feature guest appearances from longtime collaborators such as DJ Shadow, Lyrics Born, Dan the Automator, Del the Funky Homosapien, and the Grouch. Those last two fellow West Coast spitters appear on FireWire's latest single, "Oakland," a fittingly booming ode to the Cali city.
Lateef opens the track by detailing just what makes the city so special to him, from the hood rats to freaky corporate women to everything in between. Following his lead are Del and the Grouch, who use their distinctive, bass-y voices to show even more love to Lateef's hometown and shout-out "the god" Too $hort.
To complement the single release, we also have a remix of "Oakland" by Mocky. The multi-instrumentalist's name should look familiar if you're a Feist or Jamie Lidell fan, because he co-produced both artists' past two albums, including the former's latest, Metals. As such, you can hear touches of downtempo soul and pop running through Mocky's whistling and altogether-fun rework of "Oakland."
Stream the album version of "Oakland" and Mocky's remix below. FireWire drops Nov. 8 on Quannum.
