Lana Del Rey: “Video Games” (Video)

· by

New York singer-songwriter Lizzy Grant's mood-altering debut single, "Video Games," is creating a ton of buzz. (We recently featured Ms. Grant for "Playing on Prefix.") She goes by the stage name Lana Del Rey and sounds like a sultry mix between Cat Power and Nancy Sinatra. Check out the found-footage/performance video for the lush single, above. The visuals have slightly changed recently due to a copyright claim by Ryland Bouchard. Apparently, shots of his wife were used without permission.

Aside from legal troubles, the tune/video really works any way you slice it. Grant sings lines such as "open up a beer... and play a video game," "heaven is a place on earth where you/ tell me all the things you want to do," and "I heard you like the bad girls, honey/ Is that true?" with more than a few knowing winks.

Grant calls her type of music "gangsta Nancy Sinatra" and "Hollywood sad core." Those descriptions fall in line with her damaged pop culture aesthetic. This self-released single is a nice first step. Check out the videos for "Kinda Outta Luck" and "Diet Mtn Dew" at her YouTube page.

Lana Del Rey "Video Games" b/w "Blue Jeans" single will be available on Oct. 10 as a digital and limited edition picture disc vinyl via Stranger Records.
