National Talk Like a Pirate Day (MP3)

Today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day (ITLAPD) a tradition that was initially hilarious but has grown increasingly stale as it has become institutionalized. It makes sense that Lambchop, a defiantly sincere band that with much more traction in Europe, has a little fascination with the day. "National Talk Like a Pirate Day" ponders at the wonder of how such an absurd holiday has come to fruition. Lead singer Kurt Wagner starts the song off by singing "This is my song/don't sing along," isolating himself from the start and letting his isolation grow stronger over the course of 6 minutes.

Wagner's personal, somber take on the strange phenomenon is in fact as far from a sing-along as possible. "National Talk Like a Pirate Day" features some random details of Americana filtered through Wagner's difficult-to-imitate vocal style. Most of all, Wagner sees talking like a pirate as "a refuge from uncomfortable thoughts." The holiday, in Wagner's mind is fake tradition started to replaced the gaping hole of more earnest ones. It should be no surprise, if you're discovering the band for the first time, that Lambchop release a two part series called The Decline of Country and Western Civilization.

Lambchop, based out of Nashville, will release oh (Ohio), on Merge Records on October 7.
