La Roux: "Bulletproof" (Live on Ellen) (Video)

· by

La Roux is a bona fide pop star in her native U.K., where her eponymous album has hit the heady heights of the album chart and she has enjoyed several huge hit singles. She’s currently trying to replicate that success in the United States, where her unashamedly retro ‘80s synth sound might be a harder sell.

Undeterred, La Roux appeared on Ellen DeGeneres’s show this week to perform “Bulletproof,” complete with extravagant shoulderpads, synthesized drums, and more keyboards than you’ve ever seen outside a Rick Wakeman show. At least Ellen seems convinced at the end, but there’s not much here that will make people dump their Soft Cell and Human League albums.

Wow. "Unashamedly" is right.

My favorite part of the live version of this band is that they pay that dude to play the drum pads for that simple drum line. I mean, I get that it's cool to have a live guy doing it, but he's not even playing the real drums. He's essentially just hitting a drum-shaped sequencer. Why not just have that part be programmed?
