Kurt Vile

"Freak Train" (Video)

If there’s a better name in rock ‘n’ roll, I haven’t heard it. Kurt Vile deconstructs classic rock sounds to an intimate setting, as though he’s reinterpreting Neil Young songs from audience requests with only a microphone and guitar. On his latest album, Childish Prodigy, Vile occasionally veers away from his acoustic singer-songwriter approach, using his backup band, the Violators, on about half the tracks. Although his output over three albums is somewhat hit and miss, if not more prolific than his other band, the most excellent War on Drugs, songs like “Freak Train” are delightful standouts indeed.
