Update:
This track is reportedly not actually a Kanye West song. "According to West, someone stole the vocal bed, and just put their own beat underneath it."
But for whatever reason, it never ended up on the album, which we all know went on to be called My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Apparently it was scheduled to serve as a bonus track, but it didn't make the cut for that either. And until tonight, we hadn't heard the proper studio version. That all changed when the folks at DOTR decided to liberate "Mama's Boyfriend" from the vaults and, you know, it's become pretty clear why Yeezy kept this one locked up for so long.
It would have sounded right at home on any of his first three albums. But his style has changed so much that a throwback, soul-sampling joint like this would have sounded terribly out of place on Dark Twisted Fantasy. That's not a knock on "Mama's Boyfriend," though, as it has me reaching for The College Dropout as I write this.
