Jimmy Fallon introduced Kaki King as an “extraordinary guitarist” during the intro to her on his show last night (April 14), and he may well be right—she was, after all, named as the first ever female to make the “Guitar God” list in Rolling Stone and was nominated for a Golden Globe for her work on Into the Wild.
King has a new album out, titled Junior, from which “Falling Day” is taken, and while I’ve yet to hear it, this performance doesn’t exactly whet the appetite. If a female fronted version of Rush jamming with Muse sounds appealing to you, then you should probably rush out and buy Junior. But for the most part this is music made in that uncomfortable area where proficiency wins out over all those things that make music worth listening to—like passion, emotion and feeling.
