Especially during the early ’00s, Johnny Cash shared his affinity for much younger artists by dropping covers of their work, namely Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” (maybe one of the greatest covers ever) and Bonnie “Prince” Billy’s “I See a Darkness.” Now, the late Cash’s old-school country brethren Willie Nelson is doing something similar. After covering Coldplay’s “The Scientist” last year, Nelson is out with a rendition of Pearl Jam’s “Just Breathe,” from 2009’s Backspacer. This version shares a lot of ground with the original, but there’s definitely something very Willie about it. The cut will show up on Nelson’s forthcoming Heroes, out May 15 via Sony Legacy, and you can hear it now over at Rolling Stone. Nelson’s son Lukas guests.
