After 2007's Woke Myself Up and last year's reissue of Lonelier in the Morning, Julie Doiron is back in 2009 with a brand new album called I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day. And the first listen, "Consolation Prize," might throw you off a bit. The crunchy rock pop is a far cry from her threadbare acoustic stuff, but the trick she pulls with this song is one she's had in her pocket for years. She lures you in with the vocal melody, and then turns the song on its head. Here, things get weird when lurching guitar drones swell and grind down the track, only to end in shouts and crashing. And then the bright pop tune picks up right where it left off. If you're looking for more of the whispered crooning she lent to Mount Eerie's Lost Wisdom, this might leave you wanting. But for a fresh take on Doiron's unique songwriting, this track is a good place to start.
I Can Wonder What You Did All Day is due out March 10 on Jagjaguwar. You can download "Consolation Prize" here.
