Why is it that alt-country types always sound so wise when they’re crooning about how unwise they are? The title track from Magnolia Electric Co.’s newest, Josephine (to be released July 21 on Secretly Canadian) reinforces this rule to a tee: “Oh, what a fool I’ve been,” frontman Jason Molina sings over and over, sounding lovely and sad and (yes) very wise. It bodes well for the rest of the album, Magnolia Electric Co.’s first since 2006’s Fading Trails. [Pitchfork]
