This past April, producer Jonwayne began making waves in the instrumental hip-hop scene with Bowser. The 19-track album found the Los Angeles resident experimenting with sounds both dark and bright, along with some 8-bit sampling. I mean, you can't exactly name an album after the boss in the Super Mario Bros. video games without at least dabbling in some NES-inspired production.
But from the sound of the first single off his upcoming The Death of Andrew EP, Jonwayne is looking to move into even darker territory. "King" is a brooding excursion into the depths of paranoia. Backed by a beat composed only of shakers, snares, and kicks, the track is driven by layers of menacing piano, record scratches, and a well-timed Rick Ross vocal sample. There's also an unexpected surprise in the song's second half, which pulls all the elements together.
You can stream and download "King" below. The Death of Andrew drops Oct. 25 on Alpha Pup Records.
