If you don't know who Joey Bada$$ is then you will soon. The 17 year-old Brooklyn rapper straight out of Edward R. Murrow High School in Midwood lays down dense lyricism with a silky smooth flow that channels the days when Big L and Nas ran the Big Apple. His impressive skills have impressed so much that he's already worked with MF Doom and Statik Selektah.
Take the jazzy, low-key track "Waves" off his new mixtape 1999 as an example of his prowess on the mic. Bada$$ unleashes verse after verse, avoiding hook or chorus, choosing to draw you into the cadence of his delivery and his words instead.
Now the track has received the visual treatment showcasing a day in the life of Bada$$ as he skates around, parties with friends, hits the subway and plays a show. There's nothing fancy about this video. Bad$$ is disregarding the mainstream and keeping it real like no one else. It's been a minute since we saw and heard something so genuinely NYC.
