Unlike most rock docs, Julian Temple's superb doc on the Clash guitarist
Joe Strummer matched cinematic style with the eclectic but still loud/fast clash sound of its subject. And unlike
American Hardcore, it didn't sacrifice insight to do so. Like just about any documentary,
Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten contains hours of interview footage that didn't make the final cut. That kind of footage is what DVD extras were made for. Spinner has two clips from the DVD, one with fellow Clash guitarist Mick Jones talking about Strummer's guitar technique and perosnal warmth. The other features original Clash drummer Terry Chimes talking about his time spending banal band time with Joe:
The clips are too short to get a complete insight from the bandmates, but it leaves you craving more and aching to buy the DVD.
Spinner also has the soundtrack to the film, which features multiple sides of Strummer's influences, rare Strummer tracks, and traces of his legacy. Stream The Future Is Unwritten Soundtrack here.
