It’s going to take some time to digest Joanna Newsom’s sprawling triple album Have One On Me, but she performed one of the most immediately arresting songs from it on Jimmy Fallon’s show on Friday (March 5). The singer was joined by a small band for this performance, and eschewed her usual harp for a grand piano.
Sadly, there was no collaboration with the Roots, although it’s difficult to imagine what they could have added. Instead, we get a fantastically singular piece of songwriting, which is full of odd stops and starts, unexpected turns in the road, and a more straightforward approach to singing than Newsom's previous efforts.
Wonderful stuff, though it's a bit strange to see her behind a piano instead of a harp. This record impresses me more and more.
I loved this performance. She has always impressed me live. I saw her perform her last album Y's in it's entirety, and it was phenomenal from start to finish.
Really nice performance. Great illustration of how music can remain very simple and yet somehow so rich.
