Jim Jones: Pop Champagne ft. Ron Browz & Juelz Santana (Video)
Shortly after Jim Jones’ breakthrough, “We Fly High,” hit the big time (read: pop radio) he was already a joke: his sub-standard rapping, lazy drawl, and third tier status within his own crew made him into a breathing punchline. Unfortunately, “Pop Champagne,” the latest single from Jones, won’t raise his status above its dismal level: the Auto-Tuned vocals and “I drink expensive champagne, because I have, like, a shit-load of cash, and you are poor” attitude of the video were outdated at least four years ago. The song’s beat has some middle-eastern percussion, which lends it some level of uniqueness, but it’s more than likely no one was thinking about that when they started rapping about a woman “dancing on the floor like she naked.” That’s the stuff of poetry, y’all. I wanted to work this into the post, but it didn't make sense:
When I worked at a pizza joint in college, "We Fly High" became a way to piss off the managers, who all hated rap, but had special anger towards Jim Jones for some reason (probably because he is especially terrible). They threatened constantly to take away our rights to use a CD boombox while we were working if we continued to play "We Fly High", but we kept playing the song anyway. Then, the final straw happened when this guy brought in a CD-R that had We Fly High on it like 16 times. After the 7th time, the manager took the CD out, threw it away, and we lost boombox privileges for like a month.
It made us laugh hysterically for about 30 minutes, but then we couldn't play any music. But I think, somehow, it was worth it.
I'm disappointed.
