The video for Jay-Z's latest single, "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)," premiered after last night's BET Awards, and the clip plays on Jay-Z's repeated assertions on the track that he's bringing it back to the roots by having him dressed like a Rat Packer, jamming with a jazz band, and hanging out in dingy looking locales. The song isn't so much a eulogy to Auto-Tune as it is Jay-Z stepping up and claiming his mantle as the elder statesman of hip-hop, which sort of comes off like the rantings of an old man, but Jay's only like 37.
I'm not sure how this song will relate to the overall tone of The Blueprint 3 (which is due out on September 11), but if it's all about trying to be faithful to the way hip-hop used to be like, it could brick at record stores. I mean, Jay used to be famous for saying a shitload of brand names in songs like "03 Bonnie and Clyde," and now he's lecturing about rapping about money?
