It looks like the promotional duties undertaken by Janelle Monae for The ArchAndroid have finally taken their toll. Jools Holland announced that she has a poor throat just prior to this performance of “Faster,” which is most likely a consequence of her heady touring schedule across North America with Of Montreal.
But Monae is a pro, and you’d never know anything was wrong if the host of the show hadn’t mentioned it. “Faster” sounds—yep, you guessed it—even faster than the recorded version in this incarnation, with Monae and her band working it into an extremely tight Motown-on-steroids groove. Further proof, if it was even needed, that Monae is one of the live draws of the moment.
