James Pants is a tough artist to narrow down genre-wise. His tracks tend to jump from boom-bap electro to smooth tropicalia to synth-driven madness without so much as a warning. Yet, he pulls it off pretty flawlessly, even if his style-jumping can come off a little erratic at times. Proving that point is the latest single from his self-titled third album, which begins as a pleasant, albeit noisy, jam. "Clouds Over the Pacific" then breaks into a distorted, over-driven wall of sound before each instrumental element reconvenes for a brief love affair. Portions of the track touch on subgenres such as chillwave, dream pop, and the like, but nothing sticks long enough to place it in a proper box. Maybe it's their shared progressive nature that drew Pants and Tyler, the Creator to each other.
