Along with his very good sophomore album, Girls Like Me, Intuition dropped off a free project last year that was in the tradition of the old, cassette-only mixtapes you might have made for a girl/boy who caught your eye. You know, you gathered your favorite tracks from the radio and your collection and then bootlegged them onto a cassette. Then, you would write a personal note on the case or cassette itself before handing it over.
Intuition took this idea to another level last year, though, with his I Ruined These Songs For You mixtape. The premise was that he collected tracks from across genre lines, such as Raphael Saadiq and Portishead, and then rapped a complementary verse over a portion of the song. They might have been unofficial collaborations, but they almost felt official because of the way he blended in his raps. The results for the Los Angeles-by-way-of-Alaska rapper were great and he found plenty of acclaim for the project.
It was such a success, in fact, that he decided to do it again this year with I Ruined These Songs For You Too. The mixtape is due out soon and so far includes Intuition attaching his rhymes to Phantogram's "When I'm Small" and, now, Jai Paul's "BTSTU." The latter was already one of our favorite tracks of the past year, so we had a feeling we would get hooked on Intuition's take. Sure enough, we were right. He sounds right at home over the fuzzy instrumentation and even throws in some vocal effects for good measure.
You can listen to Intuition's unofficial remix of "BTSTU" below.
